Eye Health and Nutrition

Eye Protection
Proper eye protection can prevent injuries from chemical burns or foreign objects scratching the cornea. Other eye protection can protect from types of UV or infrared radiation exposure.
Cataracts
Cataracts are a condition affecting the lens of the eye. The lens becomes cloudy or hazy, making it difficult to see. Common symptoms include glare at night, difficulty driving at night, and needing more light to read. Typically cataracts are an age-related condition, but they can occur earlier due to certain medications or systemic diseases.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is an age-related condition affecting the macula, which is the central visual part of the retina. Macular degeneration causes distortion, decrease, and/or loss of central vision.
Myopia
Myopia is the medical term for near-sightedness. Myopia is becoming more and more prevalent in part due to the use of handheld devices and decreased time outdoors. High myopia increases the risk for specific conditions such as retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma. There are ways in which your optometrist can slow the progression of myopia to decrease the risk of these conditions and preserve functional vision.
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Amblyopia is a condition that occurs when the vision development between the eye and the brain doesn’t form properly. It results in a weaker eye.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerve. It is a potentially blinding condition that typically affects peripheral vision first. Often, glaucoma is associated with high pressure in the eye.
Dry Eye
Dry eye is a chronic condition that affects many individuals. In this disease, insufficient or inadequate tears can lubricate, protect, and nourish the eye.
